Torfaen CBC Election Results-Meltdown for Labour
06 May 2008

Last Thursday saw the biggest electoral upset in living memory as the electorate gave Labour a bloody nose here in New Inn and likewise across Torfaen. Labour lost overall control in Torfaen and returned only 18 seats. A similar trend across England and Wales made this the worst result for labour in over 40 years.

The New Inn results were:

Helen FORD (LAB)         667
Granville HUISH (IND)   801
David James (CON)       977  (Elected)
Raymond MILLS (CON) 913 (Elected)
Graham SMITH (CON)   813  (Elected)
Maurice MORGAN (LAB) 570
Derek SAUNDERS (PEOPLE VOICE)  609
John TURNER (LAB)      630
Former Councillor John Turner stated that "the results showed Labour had lost a substantial chunk of  core support to the Independent and People's Voice Candidates and this had let all three Conservatives candidates in". He was of the opinion that it was a mix of national isues such as the abolition of the10% tax band rate,
pensions, immigration and several 'feel bad' factors such as the credit crunch, hikes in the cost of mortgages, food and fuel price inflation which contributed to the mood swing amongst the electorate. One local issue was the Council's decision to grant planning consent to Shank's to build a domestic waste recycling (MBT) plant on the old Rechem site even though their was no certainty that it would be built.
For the  first time in living memory Labour lost overall control of the Council. Former Councillor John Turner described last thursday night at the count  as a 'blood bath' as 15 Labour Councillors lost their seats across Torfaen including many able and experienced members.
The Councils new composition is:
Labour 18
Independent 13
Conservative 5
People's Voice 3
Plaid Cymru 3
Liberal Democrats 2
