Proposed Food Waste Plant in New Inn
31 October 2012

Plans to build anaerobic food digestion waste disposal plant on the old Rechem site in Lower new Inn are to be considered by the Council in the near future. However concerns have been expressed over the possible release of foul odours which would directly affect local residents living in the immediate area of lower New Inn.

A recent visit to a similar plant in Scotland by a party of local councillors found that smells from the process were noticable around the plant. If this were the case in New Inn this would cause serious problems for householders in the lower Newport Road and Pontyfelin lane areas.

Anaerobic decomposotion of food waste produces bio gas which is mainly methane which can be used as a fuel to produce electricity. However smaller amounts of other smelly compounds such as hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans, ammonia and organic nitrogen compunds etc are produced and are removed during the process. However any small leakage would produce odours which could be a nuisance for people living in the immdeiate vicinity of the plant.
