Torfaen CBC Cabinet Vote to Scrap Sixth Forms
23 March 2010

Torfaen CBC Cabinet today voted unanimously to support the reorganisation of its post 16 learning provision by closing school sixth forms and replacing them by an integrated post-16 Learning Centre similar to Cross Keys College. Such a move would make better use of resources, widen educational opportunitie for learners and improve outcomes for students.

The case is to be put to the Welsh Assembly who would need to fund the considerable financial investment if  such a new college is to be built. WAG has expressed its interest in Torfaen's proposals which they will have to approve in principle before more detailed  plans are submitted for final approval.

All sixth forms would be included except Ysgol Gufun Gwynllw which would retain its sixth form but collaborate with the new centre and other welsh medium schools in providing post 16 welsh medium courses. The current St Alban's sixth form which has a high proportion of students who are non-catholics will be integrated into the new learning centre.
