HISTORY OF BURNMOUTH CHURCH

Exactly when the site was built upon has been lost in time. However, it is recorded that prior to 1888 when a mission hall was on the present site, the people of Burnmouth walked to Ayton to worship. For 10 years United Presbyterian Church services were held in this mission hall but in 1897 the people of Burnmouth raised sufficient funds to take over the Feu and purchase the hall. At this time they were able to satisfy the Home Mission Board and the Presbytery that the spiritual needs of the people could only be met by the formation of a fully sanctified charge. Accordingly the hall was refitted as a church and in 1898 Alexander Urquhart was inducted as the first Minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Burnmouth.
The church building you see today dates from the 1890s. The vestry and kitchen was added later and at this time the communion table and pulpit were relocated to the south of the church and the entrance through the porch under the bell tower blocked off. The present entrance is at the north end through the vestry which also doubles as a meeting room.
In 1900 the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church came together to form the United Free Church and in 1929 the church became part of the re-united Church of  Scotland and was linked with Ayton in 1969, subsequently being united in 2001.
Services are held at 9.45am every 2nd and 4th Sunday’s in the month. On the 1st and 3rd Sundays services are in Ayton at 11.00am. If there is a fifth Sunday in the month combined services are in Ayton or Reston at 11.00am.
The church is locked at other times but entrance can be gained by contacting Paul Oswald Tel 01890781419
