GLEN AFFRIC NATIONAL PARK NOMINATION
Following the announcement that Scottish Government will establish at least one new national park by the end of the current Parliament in 2026, the objectives below were developed to guide Strathglass Community Council's work torwards any national park nomination.
An early expression of interest was put forward to Scottish Government by the community council, to support a wider consultation process. We are keen to hear from all stakeholders, particularly those who live and work in Strathglass and other communities within the proposed boundary areas. Stakeholders include: landowners, government bodies, Highland councillors, education & research institutions, community groups, charities and businesses as well as visitors and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
Objectives:
To develop and articulate a shared ambition for a great Affric National Park..
To identify the potential opportunities and challenges associated with National Park designation.
To consider options for the potential boundary area of a National Park.
To engage openly with the community and other stakeholders to seek views.
Our ambition for our National Park Nomination is to enable communities to influence the development of:
Sustainable tourism
Landscape enhancement
Job creation
Protection & celebration of our heritage
Improving biodiversity
Creating housing opportunities for local people
Employment opportunities and inward investment
Visitor management
A website has been set up to support the consultation and nomination process
