Helping our communities to do more to cope in an emergency - MEETING DATES

Midlothian Police and Midlothian Council

Helping our communities to do more to cope in an emergency

When we’re hit by snow and ice, storms, or power cuts, what people do to help each other in their own communities can make a real difference. With this in mind, Police Scotland and Midlothian Council carried out a public survey last September, asking what more could be done to help support volunteers in an emergency.

As a result, two public meetings have now been organised to help local people who may want to form their own resilience groups and to discuss potential emergency plans. These will be held on

Wednesday 16 January at Edinburgh College, Eskbank, from 6.30 to 8pm and on Monday 21 January in Penicuik Town Hall, again from 6.30 to 8pm.

Council officers will attend both meetings to talk about road and pavement gritting and clearing. You will also have the opportunity hear from people who have already made resilient community groups work in their own areas.

A range of skills are needed to make these groups work - things like driving to the chemist, making cups of tea and talking to people are just as important as helping clear snow from paths. If you think you might be interested in getting involved, come along to one of the meetings to find out more.

Both venues are wheelchair accessible, but if you need any additional support or would like further information, contact PC Rona Duncan at Midlothian Council Communities Team on 0131 271 3390. Email Rona.Duncan@midlothian.gov.uk
