UPDATE from Community Council meeting 23rd August 2021

A resident wanted everyone to be aware that people were going around trying doors during the day.

Community Police Officer would encourage residents to call police on 999 in an emergency if any suspicious persons are seen at or near properties and is ongoing at the time. 101 can also be used to report non urgent incidents.

Concerns about speeding traffic on Carnethie Street including buses.

Community Police Officer plans to carry out speed checks in Rosewell and will email Roads Policing colleagues to make them aware of resident concerns.

Lothian Buses  Driver Trainers observed driver behaviour and monitored bus speeds on Carnethie Street using a Unipar SL700 hand held radar gun to accurately determine the speed of buses on 6th September 2021 between the hours of 10:10 – 11:11 and again between 14:07 – 15:12 During the course of the monitoring bus speeds were recorded travelling between 8mph to 19 mph the speed limit in this area is 20mph. During the period of observations, a female resident approached the trainers and discussed buses are not the issues it’s other road users which during the visit a number of large vehicles as well as other road users were observed speeding in this area.

Midlothian Council  understand that there are those drivers who travel at speeds which may not be appropriate for a residential area.  Speeding is a Council wide problem and MC work closely with Police Scotland through the Midlothian Road Safety Forum with the common aim to reduce traffic collisions on the road network.  While the Local Authority is responsible for setting local speeds limits, it is Police Scotland who are responsible for its enforcement.

A resident was concerned about congestion on Carnethie Street where the road narrows, also causing cars to reverse and asked if Carnethie Street could be made one way for traffic?

Community Police Officer -This would be an issue to be raised with Midlothian Council in the first instance, but will contact Roads Policing colleagues to make them aware.

Midlothian Council - While one ways systems can offer advantages for traffic flow, they can often cause problems such as increased journey times, problems for emergency vehicle access and wider crossing distances.  Often vehicle speeds will increase on a one-way street as drivers know there is no oncoming traffic.  There is no guarantee that there would be community agreement to a one-way system in Rosewell.  Given all these factors MC would be reluctant to progress a one-way system unless a significant safety benefit could be demonstrated alongside substantial local support and there is no evidence of either.

Ongoing vandalism at the woodland classroom

Community Police Officer - will patrol woodland classroom and also make the Community Action Team based at Bonnyrigg Police Station aware of the recent issues. It is difficult with it being in a secluded area within the woods but, if any residents are aware of names of culprits etc then please pass on any information to LothianScotBordersPenicuikCPT@scotland.pnn.police.uk
