Reuse Cabin at Stobhill Recycling Centre

Message from the Waste Aware Education Officer at Midlothian Council

A reuse cabin has recently opened at our Stobhill Household Waste Recycling Centre at Stobhill Road Newtongrange.

This idea was put forward from a member of staff who works at our recycling Centre as he saw a lot of reusable items being thrown straight into skips. When the public were approached to suggest they could take such items to a charity shop the response was often that they had no time to make more than the one trip and so just brought it all to throw out. On further investigation it seems that there are only one or two of all the charity shops within Midlothian that can offer parking space to unload items at the back of their premises but no kerbside unloading.

Hence the idea came about to site a container at our centre. It is being trialled in a pilot scheme for a year by a local charity. It has been onsite and open for 6 months with no advertising being done, other than for our staff to promote it by approaching any of the public coming into the centre that may have suitable items to donate.

Now that 6 months have passed, we are looking to promote it widely out in the community. We hope you can help with this by promoting it through your meetings and contacts within the community councils, community groups and social media.

For the trial period only, it is being run by MARC (Midlothian Advice and resource Centre) but if it proves to be successful it will then go out to tender offered to all charities to get involved.
