SCC LEADS GLEN AFFRIC NATIONAL PARK NOMINATION CONSULTATION

PRESS RELEASE - 3 October 2023

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR A NATIONAL PARK AT GLEN AFFRIC

Strathglass Community Council has registered an interest in developing a nomination for a new National Park, encompassing Glen Affric, neighbouring villages and glens. This will provide community councillors with support to engage with communities and stakeholders, to seek their views on the prospect of a National Park.  This will include consideration of the potential boundary for a national park, together with exploring the advantages and identifying any concerns.

Strathglass Community Councillor, Georgina Parker said “Through our informal community engagement to date, there appears to be some support for the National Park locally from people who believe that this could be a vehicle to protect our natural environment, putting communities at the heart of decision making.   We look forward to hearing more from local people on the subject, to shape any nomination.”

The nominations process, which launched on 12 October, concludes in February 2024.  We will need to quickly establish whether there is a strong appetite among local people and stakeholders, including neighbouring community councils and representative groups, to take the next step and submit a nomination.

Notes to editors:

The Strathglass Community Council area is the most sparsely populated in Scotland, incorporating three of the most beautiful glens in the world Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar.
