WAR MEMORIAL RESTORATION PROJECT

In time for the centenary commemorations of World War One, Prestonpans Community Council, East Lothian Council and the War Memorials Trust worked together to repair the William Birnie Rhind sculpture and war memorial in the town's Civic Square. This beloved memorial, depicting a soldier of the the 8th Battalion Royal Scots, was erected in 1922 to commemorate those brave individuals that gave their lives in World War One and a tablet was added after World War Two at the foot of the statue. More details about the project and the men commemorated can be found at a dedicated website here.

Following this successful repair project East Lothian Council sought funding from the Scottish Government to revamp the entire Civic Square. Having been successful in their bid, the Community Council worked with the local authority and landscape architects Rankine Fraser on the design of the new Square, the historical interpretation panels and a new war memorial, carved by local stonemason Gardner Molloy, depicting almost a local hundred individuals who had been omitted from the earlier memorials.
