FILLONGLEY FC. Est. 1950.Affiliated to B.C.F.A. -Members of Coventry Alliance League. 48, NUTHURST CRESCENT. Club Colours Red/Blue
There has been a football team in the village since the 1930s however Fillongley FC. was formed in 1950, after the demise of the local youth club teams. The club then joined the now defunct Coventry & District Saturday League, with both teams winning a number of league and cup honours during its 30 years membership. The clubs most notable honour was winning the prestigious Coventry Evening Telegraph Junior Cup in 1968. In the early years the ground was in Sandy Lane and it wasn’t until the early 70s that Fillongley FC. moved to the current ground on the recreation ground in Fillongley village, where a pavilion was built. This was financed from raised sponsorship by the founder members and players, Biscuit Winterburn, Graham Spencer, Cussy Lawson, our current President Bill Greenaway and Doug Cashmore just to name a few. Along with the seniors sides there have also been junior teams which have produced players who have gone on to play at a higher level, Nigel Winterburn started his career at under 10 level, played a season with the seniors before signing for Birmingham City and then went on to have a very successful career with Wimbledon, Arsenal & England. Ambition and interest grew and with facilities at the required standard it was decided to leave the District league in 1983 and join the Coventry Alliance league, (the old Coventry Works league). At this time there was only one team but within a couple of years the reserve team was reformed. The club are always interested in attracting new players, but in accordance with league rules you must be 16 years of age, matches are played on Saturday afternoons, pre season training starts in early July with the season starting on the last Saturday in August. Based at Fillongley Social Club in Ousterne Lane, where visitors are welcome before , during and after the game.
