Connel Bridge - Closures

We have recently received the following from Scotland Transerv:-

We are writing to you today to inform you of forthcoming essential works at the A828 Connel Bridge to ensure the continued strength of the structure.

Due to the restricted width available on the structure we require overnight closures of Connel Bridge which have been booked for four nights from Monday 2nd July to Thursday 5th July. The road will be closed to all traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, between 22.00 and 06.00 hours to ensure the safety of the public and to allow the contractor unrestricted access to complete the works as quickly as possible. A signed diversion route will be in place.

Following recent damage caused by an over-height vehicle, a number of overhead cross beams to the northern end of the bridge require to be replaced. The works also involve carrying out repairs to parts of the cross beam's supporting structure which were also damaged. As the works are overhead, the contractor will be operating access plant and lifting equipment from the bridge deck.

In addition to the steel beam replacement, repairs to the bridge deck surface will be carried out at the southern end of the bridge. This will involve removal of the existing surfacing to expose the bridge deck, followed by repairs to the concrete deck prior to reinstatement of the bridge deck surfacing. As the works will take several nights, rigid boards will be laid on the deck between closures to ensure there is a suitable traffic surface.

Advance consultation has been undertaken with the local community councils to publicise the works and their need, although firm dates could only be announced following appointment of a suitable contractor.

Access for fire, police, ambulance and coast guard vehicles on emergency duties will be provided at all times. Contact details will be issued by a separate email.
