Cathcart & District Community Council came into being on the passing of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1977, Section 52. It was given the task to represent local residents with local and other governmental agencies. It examines Planning and Licensing Applications on behalf of the local Community.
This Community Council has built up a prestigious reputation over the years by its belief in dialogue from the outset. So where controversial Planning or other applications are received, immediate dialogue with applicants is started. This has proved successful in reducing the number of objections lodged. While it makes for more work by the Office Bearers, it raises the profile of the Community Council and makes the work of the Community Council and its members worthwhile. There a number of new developments ongoing in which we are involved. So dialogue is taking place with local developers, the Glasgow City Council, staff and Elected members, local NHS staff and our local MSPs.
Our membership is elected every two years, the next election being in October 2008. We are always on the look out for new members. Besides members attending our meetings, we do have a number of regular visitors who take a lively interest in the proceedings. They express their opinions and concerns. The Community Council takes them on board. Where appropriate action will be taken to resolve their concerns. The only disadvantage that these visitors have is that they cannot vote.
We are also fortunate in that one of the local City of Glasgow councillors attends our meetings, as does the local Community Police Officer. While both our local MSP and MP have large areas to cover we do maintain constant contact with both. As both have Parliamentary Assistants who reside locally communication between ourselves is frequent and friendly.
At present this Community Council meets in the Couper Institute, 84 Clarkston Road Glasgow G44 on the last Wednesday in each month (Excepting July, August and December) at 7.30pm. All meetings are open to the public. It often arises that projects or plans give rise to local concern. In such cases representatives of those involved are asked to give a Presentation either to the meeting or at a special venue. To date we have had Presentations given by the NHS on the New Victoria Hospital; by several developers on their new developments and by the Vice Principal of the local Further Education College on its plans for a new build and refurbishment.
Local Government boundaries and changes in local government will have its effect on the work of Community Councils. This Community Council is ready and willing to face the new challenges ahead. It will continue to be the voice of the residents of the area covered by Cathcart & District Community Council
